Prague Travel Guide

Considered as one of the most fascinating cities of Europe, the capital of the Czech Republic attracts large numbers of tourists every year. Founded in the 9 th century this city has undergone many changes and seen a number of regimes starting with the Bohemian Kings, the Habsburgs and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It later became capital of Czechoslovakia and now it's old town center has been added to the World Heritage List.

Most of the Prague attractions date back to the flourishing era of Charles IV in the 14 th century.

Prague Landmarks

  • Charles Bridge across the Vltava River connects the Lesser Town to the Old Town on opposite banks of the river. This more than a half of a millennium old bridge has surprisingly survived through many floods disaster, calamities and later on even car traffic and now it is only open for pedestrian access. Built by command of Charles IV, this architectural wonder is paved with statues of biblical characters and popular saints on each side of the walkway. The structure of the bridge and the many tales and legends surrounding it make this landmark a compulsory visit for any tourist.
  • Zizkov Television Tower is a unique tower by its unusual structure and height - 216 meters. Built between 1985 and 1992, the tower is used to hold television transmitters as well as for meteorological purposes. Modern elevators transport tourists to observation decks and a restaurant at more than 100 meters above ground level. Although it now is one of the greatest towers in the world thanks to its construction and dimension, it has raised a lot of criticism among local inhabitants.
  • Petrin lookout tower has a construction resembling that of the Eiffel Tower , only at a much smaller scale as it measures only 60 meters in height. Built on top of a Prague hill in 1891, it is a popular attraction among visitors. What was initially used as a transmission and observation tower is now one of Prague 's major landmarks, offering a splendid panoramic view over the city.

  • Mucha museum is dedicated to the work of famous Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. A collection of more than 100 pieces includes Art Nouveau masterpieces, decorations and sketches as well as photographs and other personal belongings of the master.
  • National Science Museum offers more than 14 million exhibit items regarding various science areas like art, history, nature or music. Built after the designs of architect Joseph Schulz, the construction is one of the most prominent buildings in Prague and representative for Czech culture and history. The Pantheon in the center of the building is the site of many formal Czech meetings.
  • Bertramka - museum dedicated to composer A. Mozart and the Duseks. The 17 th century villa was the home of Czech musicians, the Dusek family and is where the famous artist used to stay during his trips to Prague . This magnificent setting inspired the artist to write one of his greatest masterpieces, "Don Giovanni". A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Austrian "wunderkind".
