Moscow Travel Guide
Situated on the Moskva River, the Russian capital houses more than 11 million inhabitants on an area more than 1000 kilometers wide. To art and literature enthusiasts, Moscow is a first hand tourist center. Its famous landmarks, museums and theaters, like the Bolshoi Theater or Gorki Museum , or the churches with golden domes and renowned ballet and opera shows, are just some of the highlights of Moscow .
What to visit in Moscow
- The Red Square is the oldest most history filled square in the city and houses some of Moscow 's most known landmarks, the Lenin Mausoleum and St. Basils Cathedral with its brightly painted onion domes.
- The Bolshoi Theater dates back to the 18 th century. One of the largest theaters in the world, it pleases the eye with rich ornaments, chandeliers, decoration and furnishing. It is open for public performances and with a continually growing repertoire of world class opera and ballet it is an absolute must for visitors.
- St Basil's Cathedral, a splendid sight in the Red Square was build between 1555 and1561. Tzar Ivan the Terrible had it built in commemoration of the victory of the Russian troops over capital of the Kazan khanate. In the central tower there is a church devoted to this event. There are four tower churches indicating the four compass points and on the diagonally devoted to different victories in the Kazan campaign.
- Tretyakov Gallery follows a timeline of Russian cultural development. Founded by merchant Pavel Tretyakov, this Moscow National Museum diplays pieces of Russian artists from the ancient period to contemporary artists. Memorial museum of V. Vasnetsov is also on public display inside the structure.
- The Kremlin is probably the most well known of Moscow 's monuments worldwide and an emblem of Russia , in general. Being around for many centuries now, it has witnessed most of the major events in Russian history, and is now recognized as one of the biggest museums in the world. Once you get past the beautiful and harmonious structural design with details like Spasskaya Tower , designed by architect Pietro Antonio Solari, you discover unique wonders like the ceremonial objects of Russia , treasures of the Tzars or the famous Diamond Collection.
Other sites in Moscow
- Gorky Park is the most famous of all the parks in Moscow . Situated south of central Moscow , this park is very popular among visitors and Moscow residents for its three kilometers of attractions like ornamental gardens, Ferris wheel or different events hosted in the entertainment zone.
- Novodevichy Convent built in the at the beginning of the 16 th century was used also as a fortress taking part in important historical events related to such names as Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov. Due to its importance, the nuns were all representatives of the noble families of that time. Today it houses a 16 th century wall fresco and magnificent icons. In its vicinity, Novodevichy Cemetery another of Moscow 's important landmarks, holds the tombs of famous people like Nickolai Gogol, Anton Chekhov and Raisa Gorbachev.
