Belgrade Landmarks
The Republic Square is the main town square and in the past stood in front of the Istambul Gate. Many of the buildings in Belgrade were built with construction materials from the demolished Istambul Gate, buildings such as the National Theatre. This square is home to national monuments to Branislav Nusic,Vasa Carapic and Monument to Prince Mihailo Obrenovic III that bears the signature of master sculptor Enrico Pazzio. Skadarlija also known as the Skadarska Street is an old quarter of Belgrade dating back to the 19 th century. In the past its cafes and taverns were meeting places for some of the greatest names in art of that time. The many painters, actors and writers that lived on this street have brought this quarter the fame of a bohemian lifestyle. The street welcomes visitors with its variety of well known establishments, specific architecture and a special gift from Sarajevo to the city, a replica of the famous Sebilj Fountain. Kalemegdan or the Belgrade Fortress overlooks the city and the river Sava from the town's highest point. Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church is one of the most interesting religious museums in the country.
